Background of the Study

Dietary habits play a crucial role in determining life expectancy and overall health. Research has shown that diets rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains contribute to longevity by reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and cancer (Olawale & Musa, 2024). Conversely, diets high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats are linked to premature aging and increased mortality rates (Ahmed et al., 2023).

In Gombe State, dietary patterns vary across different socioeconomic groups, with some individuals adhering to traditional diets rich in fiber and nutrients, while others consume processed and unhealthy foods. The relationship between these dietary habits and longevity remains underexplored in this region. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of dietary habits on lifespan, identifying key nutritional factors that contribute to longevity.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the known link between nutrition and longevity, many individuals in Gombe State adopt poor dietary habits, increasing their risk of chronic diseases and reduced life expectancy. Limited research exists on how dietary choices in the region impact longevity. This study aims to address this gap by assessing the relationship between dietary habits and lifespan, providing evidence-based recommendations for healthier eating.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze common dietary habits in Gombe State and their nutritional composition.

  2. To examine the relationship between dietary habits and life expectancy.

  3. To recommend strategies for promoting longevity through improved nutrition.

Research Questions

  1. What are the predominant dietary habits in Gombe State?

  2. How do these dietary habits influence life expectancy?

  3. What nutritional interventions can enhance longevity in the region?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Unhealthy dietary habits are significantly associated with reduced longevity.

  2. Individuals who consume nutrient-rich diets have a longer lifespan.

  3. Dietary modifications can improve health outcomes and increase life expectancy.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on dietary habits and longevity among individuals in Gombe State. Limitations include genetic and environmental factors influencing longevity that may not be fully accounted for.

Definitions of Terms

  • Longevity: The length of an individual’s life, often influenced by genetics and lifestyle factors.

  • Dietary Habits: The regular consumption patterns of food and beverages.

  • Nutritional Interventions: Strategies aimed at improving diet quality for better health outcomes.
